AS ONE of the country’s leading suppliers of agricultural products, Ritchey needs to deliver its goods safely and legally to farmers up and down the country.
The business was formed in North Yorkshire in 1972 to specialise in the manufacturing and supply of ear tags and animal identification products.
The portfolio has diversified since to include a range of Defra-approved animal husbandry products exported across the world including chemicals used to treat and identify livestock and fencing to herd sheep and cattle.
The smooth operation of transport and logistics is essential to the Ritchey supply chain, especially as it needs to get its products to rural locations at busy times of the year such as lambing and mating season.
Mark Lowther, warehouse team leader at Ritchey, explained:
“Transport is very important to us because of the rural locations and the awkward shapes of some of the products such as the fencing. We have to make sure it gets there in time and in good condition.

Ritchey approached Burnside Distribution after the Government introduced new legislation which restricted the capacity of hazardous goods and chemicals that could be carried without specialist licences.
“The Government decided that there had to be limited quantity of 1 litre containers on products such as the iodine that we supply during lambing season. But we have always provided these products in 2.5 litre containers as that is what our customers want – that meant we had to find a transport provider that specialises in hazardous goods and had the licences and experience to achieve that.”

On average, Burnside Distribution collects six pallets a week from Ritchey’s headquarters in Masham for delivery across the country.
